The death toll at the Bagladeshi garment factory Rana Plaza rose to 230 yesterday, after more bodies were pulled from the rubble in the aftermath of Wednesday’s building collapse. The Savar suburb of Dhaka was overrun with rallies yesterday, calling for the arrest of the building owner, and a push to pressure the government and other owners to reform building safety codes for workers. “Is basic safety too much to
ask?”, wondered garment worker Mariam Sheikh. President of the Bangladesh Textile Garment Workers’ Federation, Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, cited the egregious neglect that caused the structure, and many others, to become a hazard to those in it: “Fatal health and safety faults remain,” he said. “Faulty electrical circuits, inadequate escape routes and unsafe equipment are some of the major causes of deaths and injuries in accidents.” The little fortunate news to arise from this incident, is that victims have already been given monetary compensation, though it is a pittance. Families who lost loved ones received $250, while those who were injured got $65 to help pay medical bills
