A Former Gucci employee has been sentenced to two to six years in prison after hacking into the brand's computer servers and causing over $200,000 (£125,000) worth of damage.
Network engineer Sam Chihlung Yin pleaded guilty to computer tampering and criminal possession of computer-related materials, reports WWD. Pleading guilty meant that he was awarded a much shorter term than the expected 15 years. The sentence was passed in New York on Monday.
"The fashion industry plays a critical and driving role in the city's economy - and not just during New York Fashion Week," said District Attorney Cyrus Vance. "A computer hacker is going to state prison for attacking the network of his former employer, which is one of more than 900 fashion companies based in New York. This is but one example in the fight against cybercrime and our ongoing efforts to repel attacks and protect electronic systems."
Yin was fired from the New York-based Gucci office in May 2010, and was accused of hacking into the company's email five months later. It's reported that he used an account created during his employment to tamper with the computer system - deleting data, shutting down networks and causing hundreds of his former colleagues to lose access to documents.
